Elephant in the Room and the One Behind the Curtain
Waterloo Arts Center, Cleveland, Ohio
This body of work is reflecting on an incidents as a queer school teacher. Teaching has been and always will be a political act. One was that I was given a book to read to my class, which I ultimately decided not to share with my students. After I researched the text, I began to see its anti-trans and anti-gender expression narrative. This anti-hate agenda became a tension in my classroom or, in this case, an “Elephant in the Room.” Through fort-building and world-building practice in my classroom and studio, I advocate for a setting where the characters in the text, as well as my students, live authentically and have all their identities valued.
